Honda lauded degree transformation and dedication of faculty
NASHUA – Honda selected Nashua Community College as the “Most Improved School” in recognition of the transformation led by Professor Jason Felton, program coordinator of the Honda Automotive Technology program.
“Over the past three years, the program has seen measurable growth, with a substantial increase in student completions and successful placement into automotive careers, an area where industry demand continues to be strong,” said Leslie Macias, Industry Education East Coast Coordinator of Training Operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
Honda Automotive Technology students at NCC can enroll in an associate degree or certificate pathway. Also known as PACT (Professional Automotive Career Training), the program is a partnership between NCC, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and Honda/Acura Dealers.
“It was really great to hear why they chose to recognize us; it wasn’t just about enrollment numbers,” said Professor Felton, “When I took over the program in 2017, it was struggling. I reconnected with dealers, and I spent a lot of time going out to our partners, and building back our industry connections. It’s a huge part of making the program successful: without them, the program fails.”
Professor Felton (right) was recognized with the “Challenging Spirit Award” for his leadership in advancing industry education, said Macias, “Professor Felton has also played a key role in championing our PACE program, which connects secondary education with post-secondary pathways to build foundational skills and create a seamless pipeline into the automotive workforce.”
NCC faculty train students for employment in Honda/Acura dealerships, and to earn their ASE Master certification. Training includes classroom theory, hands-on lab work, an internship at a dealer and general education. American Honda supplies the program with vehicles, special tools, and access to technical data.
“Since 2023, I have had the opportunity to visit NCC and collaborate with Professor Felton on initiatives aimed at supporting students in successfully completing program requirements,” said Macias. “His commitment to developing future talent and strengthening the workforce is commendable, and we are grateful for his continued partnership.”
Professor Felton said the improvements were a team effort in the Transportation Technologies department, and noted that Professor Ben Wagstaff was a major help in revamping outreach efforts.
“There were a lot of improvements we made together; Professor Wagstaff has experience at the high school level, and he helped us improve out recruiting strategy since he has seen what works and what doesn’t, and we came up with ways to really engage students during our visits,” said Professor Felton.
The enrollment shows marked improvement – in 2017 the graduating class was just 4 students, and as of mid-June, enrollment for Fall 2026 is about 40. “It’s the highest enrollment we’ve ever had this time of year,” said Professor Felton.
